Recession Success..

 

With a solid and illustrious career and a retinue of academic degrees, I fully expected to succeed in the UK job market. It was a no-brainer!!! Why would I not? Who wouldn’t want me? WRONG!

 

“Be the best at everything you do and you will succeed in life.”This was my mantra - my parents drummed it into me and I lived by it.

 

To put this in context - Back then, I was paid in USD$ by the World Bank, DfID, European Commission to work with Ministers in developing Countries.

 

I had a Law Degree and 3 Masters!!!! As a Nigerian, collecting qualifications is second nature.

 

...new reality set in! U.K Broke me down!!!!!

 

“No UK work experience” was a recurring reason for not getting a job. Then it changed to “No relevant work experience in chosen field” I changed my name to my partners’ so I’d be more “appropriate and appealing to recruiters” - no deal!

 

I was crushed, demoralised, had severe low esteem and ashamed of my life. I was crushed, unfulfilled, depressed , sad, feeling inadequate and empty.

 

August 2020 in the midst of Covid-19 lockdown - God led me to talk to my sister about my feelings of inadequacy - my sister, my rock, my therapist, my support - she told me to call Prime Careers - and the rest as they say is history!!!!!!

 

I joined the September 2020 PPP cohort, put in the work, studied like a fresher - even though my 40 something year old brain was protesting . I thoroughly enjoyed the PPP course, I was excited to be in a group of likeminded colleagues - parents striving to improve their lives, start their career afresh.

 

The Week 6 interview session was a disaster! I scored circa 60%. I was demoralised! I did the CV review and just having that was a morale booster. I lived it and owned it and became it. I applied for jobs on all the sites recommended in the work plan.

 

Then the Agency calls started, it felt good to be wanted, headhunted for roles. From a nervous novice, I became a pro at responding to them and owning the conversation - dictating what role I wanted and how much and what I wanted to do.

 

This built my confidence and I was really excited just taking calls and talking with Recruiters about my career options.

 

Then I got the first interview. My interview prep was a disaster but Prime Careers coached me to a competent level.

 

My first interview was 4 ROUNDS. All in a week. Online due to Covid. I was not convinced I did well but Prime Careers were convinced I did. They encouraged me and pushed me further.

08.12.2020. I got an offer for the first role!!!!!

 

This is all down to Prime Careers. Their constant encouragement, relentless support, being always available, the sacrifices they made for me - after a hard days work, being available to take me through a mock interview, explaining every single work expectation in the JD -  they gave their best and made sure I was prepared for the interview.

 

I am happy I made them proud and proved their work is not for nothing. They covered my shame and I got my groove back. From being petrified of interviews, I enjoy them now and use it to improve and perfect my conversation and presentation skills.

 

I am thankful and owe my renewed vigour and enthusiasm for life to the wonderful and amazing team at Prime Careers!
